Some 900 plus Goose Creek children, their families and friends helped raise more than $6,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, often one penny at a time.
The Pennies for Patients campaign provided the students with the opportunity to raise money for research to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and to help improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
“We are overwhelmed with the support of the community and the hard work of the children,” said Debby Baker, Westview’s campaign coordinator. “We would like to say thanks to all those in the community that helped make this our most successful campaign to date.”
Not only did the children experience the satisfaction of the philanthropic endeavor, they also had fun. As part of the campaign, Baker and other teachers created various “incentive days,” such as Westview Primary Shirt Day, Hat Day, Crazy Socks Day, Jersey Day and Wacky Hair Day. Classrooms competed to see which room had the highest number of children donating one quarter. The lucky winner received brownies donated by CiCi’s Pizza. Also donating prizes was Wendy’s on College Park Road.
To augment the campaign, first grade teacher Amy Jolley and her class set up Muffin Day and raised more than $400 for the campaign.
“My children decided as a class, that it would be great to support the campaign in this way,” Jolley said.
“We would never have made this kind of difference without the support of the children, their families and friends, teachers and staff, and members of the community,” Baker said.
