Charleston Southern University held its Commencement ceremony May 3 as 300 undergraduate and graduate students received their degrees.
Thousands of proud parents, friends and relatives packed the North Charleston Coliseum to witness the occasion, including Johnny E. Ward of Moncks Corner, chairman of the board of trustees. “I have two grandchildren here today who are graduating,” Ward said. “I don’t know if there is anyone here today that is any prouder than I am.”
Vallejo receives high Citadel honor

Citadel Cadet Jonathan Mark Vallejo, an electrical engineering major from Goose Creek, is the 2008 recipient of the John O. Willson Ring, presented Saturday during commencement for the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.  
The Willson Ring has been awarded annually since 1911 to a senior elected by his or her peers as the finest, purest and most courteous member of the class. Willson, who was a Citadel student until 1862 when he left to join the Confederate Army, established the award to honor the most popular student among his or her peers.
Trident Technical College will hold its 44th graduation ceremony Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Tom Stubbins, vice president of Human Resources for Vought Aircraft Industries, will give the commencement address.
Tech students participate in Harvard Model UN

Ten students from Trident Technical College participated in this year’s Harvard National Model United Nations in Boston. More than 3,000 delegates from the United States and 37 countries attended to discuss issues at the forefront of international relations.
Tech students spent four days debating, collaborating, brainstorming and developing resolutions in the unique simulation. Topics included terrorism in Africa, maritime security, public-private partnerships, sovereignty and the right of intervention, free and fair elections, child soldiers and bio-terrorism.

Offered by TTC’s Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development, the program consists of four courses. Each course is approximately seven weeks long and is offered entirely online. Upon completion of the program, students have the skills necessary to immediately begin a career as an investigator.
Kelly J. Stewart of Goose Creek, the  daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stewart, has been named to Furman University’s Dean’s List for winter term 2008.
Also making the list was Daniel J. Roberts of Moncks Corner, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Roberts.
Charleston Southern University recently announced its commencement exercises will be held on Saturday, May 3 at the North Charleston Coliseum. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.
The commencement speaker this year is Dr. George Greene, founder and president of Water Missions International based in Charleston.  Dr. Greene is responsible for providing spiritual, technical, and strategic guidance for Water Missions International. As Chief Technical Officer, he oversees the design and implementation of WMI’s safe water solutions ministry all over the world.
Coastal Carolina Community College’s Office of Instruction has announced that Enid Randal and Peter J. Witman are this year’s recipients of the college’s Academic Excellence Award.
Criteria for the annual award requires a student to have completed at least 12 semester hours in an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science or Associate of General Studies degree and have a cumulative grade point average not less than 3.25.
