Students win recognition

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer's office has announced the 190 winners of the 2008 Lt. Governor's Writing Awards Program.

The program recognizes students in fifth through eighth grade.

According to a released statement, Sangaree Intermediate School student Dean Gernon and College Park Middle School student Maria Alexandra Figueroa-Rivera won in Berkeley County School District.

The program began in 1979. Each school selects an essay to vie in a district competition. After district winners are announced, the essayists compete for the four regional titles. David Joshua Bucci of Dorchester Academy in Dorchester County won for District Three, which includes Berkeley County.
