High School Headlines
In an effort to increase the number of 10th graders passing the HSAP exit exam at Stratford High School, an exciting campaign has been undertaken.
This includes math questions of the day, specialized math lessons, advisement lessons, after school and Saturday tutoring and a numerical countdown in the main hall on the school’s flat screen televisions.
Goose Creek High School Principal Jimmy Huskey has an ambitious goal: increase student interest in summer reading at a time when studies show that reading rates among youth are declining nationwide.
He has a plan, one that is supported with grant funding, and that includes a few new ideas, not mention some incentives to lure students into opening their summer reading books before Labor Day weekend.
Berkeley High’s Tabor named teacher of year
District 2007 Teacher of the Year Harold Tabor
After an exhaustive selection process the Berkeley County School District Teacher of the Year was announced at Trident Technical College Thursday morning.
Berkeley High School Special Education teacher Harold Tabor won the accolade, which came with an Oscar-inspired miniature statue.
Foreign high school students are scheduled to arrive soon for academic semester home-stay programs, and the sponsoring organization needs a few more local host families.
According to Pacific Intercultural Exchange (P.I.E.) President, John Doty, the students are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years, are English-speaking, have their own spending money, carry accident and health insurance, and are anxious to share their cultural experiences with their new American families. P.I.E. currently has programs to match almost every family's needs, ranging in length from a semester to a full academic year, where the students attend local high schools.
Teachers go to class at Stratford High
At the 2008 Instructional Fair, keynote speaker Frank Miles dazzled members of the school board and 2,500 teachers with jokes, juggling and more.
While Berkeley County students were sleeping in on Friday, 2,500 Berkeley County teachers were filing out of buses and into Stratford High School for the Berkeley County Teacher Forum’s 2008 Instructional Fair at SHS.
The Teacher Forum, an advocacy organization for advancing teachers through leadership training, is comprised of the school district’s teachers of the year. The Instructional Fair is an annual event designed to help teachers advance teaching methods in the classroom.
