Berkeley High’s Tabor named teacher of year

After an exhaustive selection process the Berkeley County School District Teacher of the Year was announced at Trident Technical College Thursday morning.

Berkeley High School Special Education teacher Harold Tabor won the accolade, which came with an Oscar-inspired miniature statue.

"Wow … I think for the first time, I'm speechless," Tabor said after being called to the stage. "My message is very, very simple: I'm being recognized for what I love to do."

The exhaustive selection process started with 36 of the 1,800 Berkeley County teachers who were selected by their school as teachers of the year.

College Park Middle School science teacher Dottie Adams and Devon Forest Elementary guidance counselor Creighton Eddings were runners up, and were named Honor Roll Teachers.

The 2007 Teacher of the Year Kelly Bearden announced the 36 teachers at last week’s ceremony. All 36 will participate in the 2008 Teacher Forum.

When Bearden spoke of the teachers – especially Tabor – her voice wavered.

Tabor began his career 21 years ago. For the last year, Tabor has taught in the self-contained classroom for students with moderate to severe disabilities.
