Hanahan Middle School eighth grader Cameron Larkin recently won the 2008-2009 State Superintendent’s Writing Contest for Berkeley County School District.
Cameron was chosen as a school winner from over 100 eighth graders at Hanahan Middle and chosen as district winner out of the eight school winners across Berkeley County School District.

Westview Middle School will hold Student vs. Faculty basketball game at the Goose Creek High School gymnasium April 2.
The game will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is being sponsored by Westivew's Student Council. This will be a rematch from a previous game in November; the faculty won but the students are looking to settle the score.

Shannon Brennan, a sixth grader at Marrington Middle School was nominated to attend the prestigious Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, DC from Sept. 27 - Oct. 2.
Her teacher, Denise Hill, nominated Shannon while she was a fifth grader at Boulder Bluff Elementary school. She was nominated for her citizenship, patriotism, and leadership while a student at Boulder Bluff Elementary.

A 9-11 memorial concert, featuring the Sangaree Middle School seventh grade concert band, strings and chorus, will be held at 7 p.m., Sept. 8 in the multi-purpose room of the school.
Vocal, instrumental, and orchestral patriotic music, plus a slide presentation to honor the victims and heroes of 9-11 will be presented.

“Journey to the Middle” will take place at Westview Middle School on Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. until noon.

This year’s sixth graders at Sangaree Middle School are invited to attend “Camp Soaring Eagle,” a half day of activities designed to help with going-to-middle-school jitters.
The camp is planned for 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Aug. 15 at the school. Only sixth graders will attend on this day, as part of their orientation to middle school.

Single-gender classes will be offered next year at Berkeley Middle School.

Snuggled among 500 or so pieces of artwork by Berkeley County students on display two weeks ago at Northwoods Mall, a pastel picture of a pink lily boasted bright colors against a slate gray background. As shoppers passed, some stopped to look at the magnified depiction.

Shelby Droze
Shelby Droze, an eighth grade student at Marrington Middle School, was a dual winner in the recent Lt. Governor’s Writing and Governor’s Citizenship Awards. Her essay for the Lt. Governor’s Writing Award was chosen as the school’s winner and also received second place for the Berkeley County School District. Shelby has also been chosen to receive Marrington School’s Governor’s Citizenship Award.

“Marley and Me” by John Grogan, the book choice for One Book Berkeley, was the inspiration for Sangaree Intermediate School’s first dog walk, held Feb. 9 at the school. Fifty-two dogs entered the walk and brought 116-plus people with them.
Judges for the event included Ramona Grimsley of the Berkeley County Libraries, and representatives from SPCA and Petsmart. Categories for judging included the hairiest, biggest, smallest, best walker on a leash, best groomed, loudest and most fit.

NCIS from the Charleston Naval Weapons station participated in Westview Middle School's Annual Career Day coordinated by WMS guidance counselor Stephanie Hall. Over 110 speakers for took part. Above, Special Agent Stanley Garland and Special Agent Frank Pruzzi speak to students in Mrs. Pippens-Brown and Ms. Fann's classroom to discuss the requirements and training needed to become Criminal Investigators for the Navy. In a controversy that has caught the attention of the entire county, Berkeley Middle School teacher Lori Teuton has rejected a transfer offer to Goose Creek's Sedgefield Middle School.
