Art keeps student out of trouble
Sangaree Middle School eighth grader Brad'lee Herian has been keeping out of trouble through his artwork. Currently, he is working on a large ocean scene.
Snuggled among 500 or so pieces of artwork by Berkeley County students on display two weeks ago at Northwoods Mall, a pastel picture of a pink lily boasted bright colors against a slate gray background. As shoppers passed, some stopped to look at the magnified depiction.
Orange hues blended into pink petals, and green foliage contrasted the perfectly centered flower.

Marrington student captures awards
Shelby Droze
Shelby Droze, an eighth grade student at Marrington Middle School, was a dual winner in the recent Lt. Governor’s Writing and Governor’s Citizenship Awards. Her essay for the Lt. Governor’s Writing Award was chosen as the school’s winner and also received second place for the Berkeley County School District. Shelby has also been chosen to receive Marrington School’s Governor’s Citizenship Award.

Sangaree event goes to the dogs

“Marley and Me” by John Grogan, the book choice for One Book Berkeley, was the inspiration for Sangaree Intermediate School’s first dog walk, held Feb. 9 at the school. Fifty-two dogs entered the walk and brought 116-plus people with them.
Judges for the event included Ramona Grimsley of the Berkeley County Libraries, and representatives from SPCA and Petsmart. Categories for judging included the hairiest, biggest, smallest, best walker on a leash, best groomed, loudest and most fit.
Macedonia Middle School was the site of the recent Berkeley County School District Spelling Bee. Fifty-one fifth through eighth graders who previously qualified at their respective schools participated in the annual event. The top 12 students qualified to participate in the Regional "SpellBound" competition to be held in Charleston Southern University's Lightsey Chapel March 13. NCIS from the Charleston Naval Weapons station participated in Westview Middle School's Annual Career Day coordinated by WMS guidance counselor Stephanie Hall. Over 110 speakers for took part. Above, Special Agent Stanley Garland and Special Agent Frank Pruzzi speak to students in Mrs. Pippens-Brown and Ms. Fann's classroom to discuss the requirements and training needed to become Criminal Investigators for the Navy. The two also stressed the importance of getting good grades and staying on the right side of the law.
In a controversy that has caught the attention of the entire county, Berkeley Middle School teacher Lori Teuton has rejected a transfer offer to Goose Creek's Sedgefield Middle School.
In what has turned into a high profile incident, Teuton, a National Board Certified, 12-year veteran of the classroom, recently sent a 13-year old female student to the office at BMS.
Davis settling in as Westview principal

Westview Middle School Principal Jerome Davis may be new, but his passion for children and love of learning are helping create a positive atmosphere for students, staff and parents.
Beginning as a science teacher and then working as an assistant principal for three years, Davis was excited to accept the position as a full-time administrator.
"Today's your choice. You can choose to make it a great day or not."
This is the decision that Westview Middle School students will make every morning for their latest project, the  "Warrior Wisdom" program.
Marrington Middle School students recently earned their second opportunity to compete in the South Carolina State mock trial competition in December.
MMS captured the Lowcountry regional title with a team consisting of sixth through eighth grade students - nine of which return from last year's team.
Sangaree Middle School eighth grade science teacher Ina Eaton was recently chosen as the 2007 "Outstanding Earth Science Teacher" for the state of South Carolina.
She received the honor from the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
The Marrington Middle School Web site Auction is now taking place.
For the first time a Berkeley County School is hosting an online auction to raise money. The MMS band will operate the site, which began Nov. 19 and will continue until Nov. 29 at noon.
