Football Headlines
A.J. Green is gone, but Region 8-AAAA football carries on.
This region lost a lot of talent with the departure of the Summerville All-American receiver and the likes of Fort Dorchester defensive end Robert Quinn, Beaufort running back Adrene Byas and Colleton County QB Zack Singleton. However, competition inside the region should be as strong as ever as other players get their chance to shine.
The nature of the beast in high school and collegiate sports is change.
Either via graduation or transfer, opting out early to be eligible for the draft, or even grades, a high school or college coach is constantly looking at tomorrow and wondering, “What holes will I have to fill next?”
Stags look to Region 7-AAAA title
Berkeley’s Dante’ Richardson breaks into the clear during the Stags’ preseason triumph over Hanahan.
The first quarter between the lines will help shake loose those first-game jitters.
Returning just nine starters off last year’s Region 7AAAA champion team, the Berkeley Stags are faced with a bit of a rebuilding process this fall, even though the rising 21 lettermen should adequately fill any void carrying over from 2007.
Patriots look great for 2008
Fort running back Dante Ravenel had nearly 800 all-purpose yards last season.
The Patriots have both experience and speed on their side entering the 2008 season.
This year, Fort Dorchester is one of the most veteran teams in the area and stands to be one of the most exciting.
Gators ready to build on success
Gator quarterback Donta Brown barks out the signals as center Dennis Large prepares to snap the ball during the Berkeley County Jamboree.
Goose Creek Head Coach Chuck Reedy’s goal for the 2008 Gators remains the same: Keep improving.
After a 2007 season that saw the Gators post an 8-4 record and notch a victory over rival Stratford, that goal could be a challenging one.
Stratford looks to rebound, not reload
Senior offensive lineman Antonio LaFortune will be on a mission in 2008: protect the Knight quarterback.
By all accounts, the 2007 season was a disappointing one for Stratford’s football team.
Snapped was a mammoth winning streak in region play, and the Knights went on to finish with a losing record for the first time since 1995.
Green Wave making adjustments
Senior Donny McElveen transferred to Summerville this year and is expected to have an immediate impact on the Green Wave team.
The 2008 season brings a lot of change for the Green Wave football team.
Summerville’s go-to guy is gone as All-American receiver A.J. Green heads the list of 42 players who graduated last spring.
There’s something mammalian that strikes a cord in the male psyche – women too, for that matter.
Food, football and fall: they belong together.
Julian “Doc” Davis has coached football for 32 years, but as the head coach for Ashley Ridge High School he faces challenges the likes of which he has never seen.
As the coach for Spartanburg High School, Davis learned a thing or two about rebuilding a football team.
Swamp Foxes expect rough start
The Ashley Ridge offense (right) lines up against Pinewood.
The Ashley Ridge football team will likely take its share of lumps in its debut season. In fact, coach Julian “Doc” Davis is counting on it.
The team is comprised exclusively of freshmen and sophomore athletes, but will play a full varsity schedule against teams that includes juniors and seniors.
Cane Bay starting from scratch
The Cobras take to the practice field.
There will be many “firsts” at Cane Bay High School this fall … and hopefully a first win on the football field will be among them.
The Cobras began their first day of preseason practice Aug. 1. It was the team’s first-ever practice, leaving the school with less than a month to prepare for its inaugural varsity football season.
Trojans look to keep improving
Cross quarterback Devante Jenkins prepares to fire a pass in preseason action at Goose Creek.
Heading into the final days of preparation for the season-opener against James Island, Cross football coach James Waring said his Trojans have plenty of work to do to get ready.
“We’re still trying to find the right mix and combination,” said Waring, who enters his fifth season at the school. “We’re still changing some things as we speak.”
Timberland poised for Class AA title
The Wolves’ defense will be strong in 2008 as THS aims for a state title.
Don’t go engraving that state championship trophy just yet.
While many across the Lowcountry have already christened Timberland as state champ presumptive in 2008, Wolves head coach Art Craig dismisses such talk out of hand.
Wolverines eye region championship
Woodland quarterback Robert Smith warms up on the sidelines.
Woodland is coming off its best season yet and looking to do even better in 2008.
The Wolverines finished 7-3 last year and tied for second in Region 5-AA before falling to Hanahan in the playoffs. That’s the most wins the team has ever had.
Chuck Reedy is entering his seventh year as the head football coach at Goose Creek High School, and all of his energy is focused on the Gators continuing to make strides.
His success at Goose Creek has been great – but Reedy is also well known as one of the most respected former college coaches in South Carolina history.
Senior laden Panthers out to improve
Pinewood running back Chris Morgan eludes a tackle.
Second year coach Pinky Guerard is looking for improvement out of this year’s Pinewood Panthers.
The Panthers went 1-9 in 2006, but rebounded last year to finish 6-4 in the regular season and advance to the SCISA playoffs, where they lost in the first round to Augusta Christian.
Cavaliers make jump to 11-man ball
St. Johns Cavalier quarterback Ellis Hammond rolls out for a pass during the first week of fall practice.
It’s been a big summer for the St. John’s Christian Academy Cavaliers.
Not only is St. John’s gearing up for its season opener at home against Lauren’s Academy, but the Cavs will take the big step up to 11-man football.
