Football players selected for all-star game

Summerville, Ashley Ridge, Fort Dorchester and Woodland high schools will all be represented during this year’s South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association North-South All-star Game.

Officials recently released the rosters of players who will compete in the 64th annual All-star event. Scheduled for Dec. 10 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, the game will pit some of the best senior football players from the southern part of South Carolina up against some of the top seniors from the northern part of the state. The athletes come from all regions and classifications and were each nominated by their high school coach.

Dorchester County athletes selected to play for the South team are Summerville offensive lineman Jarrid Govia (6-1, 265), Ashley Ridge receiver Seamus McKinney (6-1, 180), Fort Dorchester receiver Devron Glenn (5-10, 176) and Woodland linebacker Shane Britt (6-0, 195).

Govia is in his second year as a starter for the Green Wave offense. His skills have been vital this season as he brought experience to a group of Summerville linemen that lacked varsity playing time.

“He is an all-around good offensive lineman,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “He has been a big asset the last two years because he can play any position on the line, plus he is very strong and physical and loves the game.”

McKinney has been the leading receiver for Ashley Ridge since the school opened four years ago. Last season he made 71 receptions for more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. This year, he has 36 catches for 524 yards and eight TDs.

Glenn’s speed and elusiveness made him a valuable part of the Fort Dorchester offense the past four seasons. He has quarterback experience, but the past two seasons he has been used primarily as a receiver.

Last year, Glenn made 40 receptions for 494 yards and four TDs while also rushing for 594 yards and seven TDs. This season, his third as a starter, he has 44 receptions for 423 yards and has rushed for 234 yards and three TDs. In addition, he has 326 yards in kick returns on the season.

Britt has anchored the Woodland defense for the past few seasons. The middle linebacker has good speed and has developed a reputation as a heavy hitter.

Berkeley coach Jeff Cruce will be the head coach for the South all-stars this year. His assistants are Dan Pippen (North Augusta), Jody Jenerette (Aynor), Glynn Darby (Bethune Bowman),, Darrell Lilly (Midland Valley) and Herman Johnson (Edisto). They considered nominations for players and videotape of those nominated in action before selecting the players for the team.

In all, 19 Lowcountry athletes were selected for the South team. Other all-stars from the area are Danny Croghan (Bishop England), Kyle Clark (Beaufort), Anthony Enos (Cane Bay), Hunter Shepherd (Berkeley), Devin Brown (James Island), Lee Mayes (Timberland), Raemond Robinson (Goose Creek), Michael Sulka (Blufton),  James Middleton Jr. (Timberland), Eric Hilton (West Ashley),  Steven Sawyer (Berkeley),  Lee Cromedy (Georgetown),  Matt Steffensen (Goose Creek),  Eric Dickerson (Stratford) and Tyler Stasky (Wando).

Croghan and Stephen Cagle of AC Flora are the only two athletes listed as quarterbacks on the South roster.

David Berry of Blackville Hilda will serve as the head coach for the North team.

Tickets for the all-star game are $10 and can be purchased in advance through the association’s web site (www.northsouthallstarfootball.com) or at the gate. The association also has tickets available for its awards presentation for the same price.
