“We are playing really well right now,” Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy said. “We are doing a good job of getting the ball to our key players and making plays. This is two games in a row where we haven’t punted. Our defense is also playing great. When they can stop teams on their first few possessions and give us good field possession we can put a game away.”
The Gators (9-1) needed only a minute and 1/2 to score and only nine minutes to take a commanding lead.
Senior defensive back Kelby Bryant intercepted a tipped pass on the third play from scrimmage and returned it 32 yards into the end zone. The Gators forced Ashley Ridge (7-3) to punt on its ensuing possession and linebacker T.J. Burrell blocked the kick, which then rolled out of the end zone for a safety.
After the free kick, the Gators drove 45 yards in eight plays to score on a 1-yard dive by fullback Virgil Smalls. After a successful Swamp Fox punt, Smalls scored on a 26-yard run and the Gators took a 23-0 lead on Masamitsu Ishibashi’s extra-point kick with nearly three minutes still remaining in the first quarter.
Smalls finished with three TDs on the night to increase his total for the year to 25.
Ashley Ridge’s only score of the game came on a 37-yard field goal for a 23-3 Gator lead with 7:59 remaining in the second quarter. The field goal capped a 57-yard drive that was the Swamp Foxes’ longest drive of the night.
Ashley Ridge quarterback Jacob Thompson completed a 32-yard pass to running back Vernon Moree and a pair of passes to receiver Mikey Goodwine for 18 more yards on the drive. Romelo Doctor rushed for approximately 20 yards on the series.
After the field goal, the Gators continued to use their platoon of offensive backs and stiff defense to dominate the game. Goose Creek rolled off 545 yards of total offense while holding Ashley Ridge to 141 yards. The second half belonged mostly to the subs.
Calib Kinlaw had 12 carries for 110 rushing yards and a TD. Smalls finished with 93 yards on 12 carries. Gator QB Jaquan Marsh rushed for 57 yards and a TD and completed 9 of 11 passes for 123 yards and two TDs. Receiver Tramel Terry had four catches for 78 yards and a TD and rushed for 20 yards.
For the Swamp Foxes, Thompson completed 5 of 12 pass attempts for 44 yards. Goodwine had 42 of the receiving yards. Backup running back Sean White had 56 rushing yards. Zack Armstrong had 67 yards in kick returns for Ashley Ridge.
