Just three weeks ago Summerville was 6-2 and in good position entering the final stretch of the regular season. But then the Wave dropped two games in a row, both region contests, so it now has its back against the wall.
This week Summerville faces Colleton County, a team that is still searching for its first win of the season. The Cougars will play for pride while Summerville will play in hopes of securing a better finish in its region and a more favorable playoff seeding.
“We’ve watched video on them and really they aren’t much different from teams like Beaufort and West Ashley so they could easily win this game,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “No one has beat them that bad except for the Goose Creek teams and they have been like us in that they are beating themselves.”
Colleton has some talented athletes and in fact returned a veteran group that includes nine defensive starters and six starters on the other side of the ball. However, the team can’t seem to catch a break.
Summerville also has talent, but has struggled in finding the end zone this season. The Wave is coming off losses to Ashley Ridge and Beaufort so it will be important for members of the team to not get discouraged if they get out to a slow start in Walterboro.
Summerville has 11 turnovers in the last two games so ball protection will be even more important.
“We’ve been laying the ball on the ground so that is something we have been working on in practice,” McKissick said. “Hopefully if we can avoid that and cut down on penalties we will be ok, but I’m focusing on that seventh win before I worry about any others. We are just going to take one game at the time.”
