Patriots out to keep streak alive
The Patriots are looking to notch their third straight win as they host the Warriors this week for their final home game of the regular season.
Fort Dorchester (6-3) is coming off wins over West Ashley and James Island while the Wando (5-4) is coming off a loss to region power Goose Creek. Patriot coach Steve LaPrad is expecting a tough contest, but hopes his team can ride the momentum it has built up to another victory.
“Wando has a good team with good size and speed,” LaPrad said. “They switched to running the option and won like four straight games afterwards. They have the defensive end everyone is so high on and two monsters on the offensive line who play well. But our defense is improving every week. We can’t stop everyone, but they are playing well enough to keep us in ball games. Also, we have been doing the things we thought we should be able to do on offense lately.”
The Warriors have impressive wins over Ridge View, Ashley Ridge and Beaufort, but haven’t had similar results the rest of the season.
The team does feature a stout defense, which is anchored by D-1 prospect Gimel President. The 6-foot, 252-pound lineman is one of five starters who returned on that side of the ball this season. Other key players on the unit include defensive end Austin Fister, linebacker Dezmond Venning, nose guard John Elwood and cornerbacks Cameron Coakley and Antwon Wright.
The Warrior offensive line has three players who are 6-4 or taller and all weigh-in at over 260 pounds. Two are listed just above 300 pounds.
With that group leading the way, quarterback Josh Walker and running Stephen Wilson and Cameron Rouse have had great success rushing.
The Patriots began the season by posting tremendous passing stats in their first three games. The team ran into a bit of a rut and started concentrating more on its running attack for several weeks. Last week, the team was strong on both fronts as QB Ethan Long passed for 337 yards and four TDs and the Patriots rushed for 185 yards.
Weapons aren’t a problem for Fort Dorchester this year as they have plenty. However, they will all need to be in synch against the Warriors.
On the other side of the ball, the Pats will have to sniff out which of the Warrior rushers will be heading up field and stop them. In the past, the Warriors have passed enough to keep their opponents honest, but it is the tenacity of their ball carriers that makes them dangerous.
