Patriots overwhelm Trojans

Fort Dorchester rolled over James Island Friday as it earned a 45-19 victory.

The Patriots took a 42-13 lead in the first half at James Island and coasted to the victory to improve to 6-3 on the year. The Trojans, playing without their first-string quarterback, fell to 4-5.

“This is probably the most complete game we have played all year,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “We got out to a fast start and did the things we know we can do. Ethan Long had a good game passing the ball and everyone caught the ball. We also looked better on defense than we have in other games.”

Patriot QB Ethan Long completed 15 of 29 pass attempts for 337 yards and four touchdowns. TJ Smith had nine catches for 187 yards and two TDs while Rodney Gibbs had four receptions for 100 yards and two TDs.

The Patriots also rushed for 185 yards and a pair of TDs. Daitwan Commodore had 72 rushing yards while Charles Loftland had 68 and a run for a score. Long finished with 18 yards, including a 1-yard TD run.

The Patriots’ defense held James Island to 270 yards of offense, 161 of which came on the ground. The Fort had six tackles for a loss and a sack, shared by Ronald Palmer and Kevyn Flores. Bryce Tapscott led the team in tackles with eight.

The Patriots also had interceptions from Gibbs and Kenny Fenton-Griffit.

The game marked the return of Patriot kicker Ryan Grainger, who hadn’t played since being injured on a kick off against Goose Creek. He hit a 22-yard field goal and was 5 for 5 on extra point attempts and averaged 50 yards per kickoff.

The Patriots were able to make a lot of substitutions during the second half. This week, Fort Dorchester hosts Wando for its final home game of the regular season.
