Summerville earns road win over Cougars

Summerville finished its regular season with a lackluster win over Colleton County.

The Green Wave traveled to the winless Cougars on Friday and earned a 21-7 victory to improve to 7-4 on the season with a 2-2 mark in region play. Summerville advances to host Fort Dorchester in the opening round of the Class 1-AAAA playoffs Nov. 11 while Colleton (0-11, 0-4) saw its season come to an end.

The Wave went largely with a ground attack against the Cougars, which also heavily favored the run. It was a good night for Summerville backs Devon Anderson, who rushed for 167 yards on 26 carries, and Jerod Tucker, who picked up 84 rushing yards and scored on runs of 17 and 3 yards.

“I feel good about the win, but we have to play better going into the playoffs,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “Devon ran good and broke a lot of tackles and the defense played good except for on a couple of plays.”

Koree Stillings led the Wave defense, making 10 tackles including three for a loss and two sacks.

After nearly two quarters without a score, Summerville put together an 88-yard scoring drive. Key plays included a 43-yard pass from Dalton Saunders to Markese Tucker and a 31-yard run by Tucker that resulted in a first-and-goal for the Wave. Saunders capped the drive with a one-yard keeper with 2:37 remaining in the half. Parker Cleveland added his first of three extra-point kicks for a 7-0 Wave lead.

On Colleton’s ensuing possession, the Cougars fumbled and senior Justin Murphy recovered to give Summerville a short field. Tucker needed only one carry to find the end zone from 17 yards out and the Wave carried a 14-0 lead into the half.

On Summerville’s first possession of the third quarter, the Wave drove 75 yards to score. Anderson had a 40-yard carry to move the Wave into the red zone and Tucker scored from 2 yards out.

Colleton’s score didn’t come until late in the game, after the teams began subbing heavily. A big gain on a punt return set the Cougars up for a 52-yard scoring drive. Colleton gained most of the yards on a hook and lateral play that moved the ball inside the 10. Then Weston Stratton scored from 4 yards out and Jarrett Ritter added the extra-point kick with 4:48 remaining in the final quarter.

Sophomore tight end Sean Smith (6-6, 225) recovered Colleton’s ensuing on-side kick and from then on the game was mostly about defense and clock management.

The win is McKissick’s 593rd as Summerville’s head coach.
