Swamp Foxes cruise through first round

Ashley Ridge took charge in the second half Friday to earn a 48-7 victory over Laurens in the opening round of the Division II-AAAA state playoffs.

The Swamp Fox running tandem of Romelo Doctor and Vernon Moree provided four touchdowns and Ashley Ridge quarterback Jacob Thompson threw for approximately 150 yards as the Foxes earned their first home playoff victory. Senior receiver Seamus McKinney had four catches to account for more than 100 of Ashley Ridge’s receiving yards.

Laurens (5-7) was eliminated from the playoffs with the loss while Ashley Ridge (9-3) advances. The Foxes will host Stratford at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a rematch of a game in which the Knights handed the Foxes a 31-24 loss.

“I thought our guys played solid in all three phases of the game,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said of his team’s first-round performance. “I was concerned going into the game because of our big win the week before. Usually teams will have a let down or don’t play inspired football after a win like that so this is a good sign going into round two. We will need to play solid in every aspect against Stratford. They don’t make many mistakes if any.”

Ashley Ridge took a 14-7 lead into the half off two big runs. Moree put the Foxes on the board with a 33-yard TD run. After Laurens scored with a pass, Doctor broke free on a 38-yard scoring run.

Moree found the end zone again on Ashley Ridge’s first drive of the second half, which covered 80 yards. Soon after, Ashley Ridge recovered a fumble that set up Doctor’s second TD run, which with Dalton Robinson’s extra-point kick gave the home team a 28-7 lead early in the third quarter.

From that point it was a matter of the Foxes playing good defense and protecting the ball. However, Ashley Ridge did manage to add three scores.

The first two came on short runs by Zack Armstrong and Shawn White. The last came on an interception, which Steven Sammons returned 40 yards into the end zone.
