Despite five turnovers, the Eagles found a way to knock off Summerville, 17-7, on Friday to even their record at 5-5 with one regular season game to play.
Senior running back D'Vonta Cohen rushed for 159 yards on 26 carries and fullback Jaclay Mixon added 82 yards on 18 carries to propel the Eagles (5-5, 2-2 Region 8-AAAA) over Summerville (6-4, 1-2).
Quarterback Alex Gregory completed eight of 13 passes for 190 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Broussard, who caught five passes for 174 yards.
"We're not a bad offensive team when we don't turn the ball over," said Clifford.
"The first half was very frustrating. I got a little fired up at halftime. We felt the defense was doing a good job and we felt we could move the ball but we had to eliminate those turnovers."
Turnovers also plagued Summerville as the Green Wave also had five. Summerville managed only 40 yards in the second half and finished with 148 total yards.
"We're going backwards," said Summerville coach John McKissick of his team's offensive woes. "We're just not good right now. We have to get better and take better care of the ball."
The first half was one both coaches would like to forget as each team committed four turnovers and numerous penalties.
Beaufort managed to hold the ball long enough to take a 7-0 lead on Cohen's 1-yard run with 11:14 left in the second quarter.
Mitchell Stewart added a 33-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead before Saunders hit Markese Tucker in the back of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds left in the half.
The lone score of the second half came in the fourth quarter when Gregory connected with Broussard to cap a 99-yard drive on four plays.
"That was a big drive, up by three and backed up to our goal line," said Clifford. "The kids showed a lot of character and made a couple of big plays."
Summerville plays at Colleton County next Friday while Beaufort is at home against Goose Creek.
