What ever happened to the music standards of the 60’s and 70’s? Many of you who are parents know that MTV and VH1 have taken over with young kids with exposure to rap music (which is not age-appropriate), videos, and the so-called “booty dancing.”
Kids today would be embarrassed that their parents once watched “American Bandstand” or “Soul Train,” and knew how to do the “twist” or the “mashed potato.” For those of you who have seen the movie Hairspray, you might wonder why the year 2008 can’t have a program like the “Corny Collins Show.”
I do like some rap music, but I also very much enjoy the older music and dancing from the 60’s and 70’s. Music lyrics, videos and dance styles today are not appropriate for younger children, and give kids too much adult exposure. Why can’t there be more movies and music like Hairspray?
I believe many parents and kids would like a program like American Bandstand, and the kids would have a better influence to follow in life. Adults are constantly complaining about children today growing up too fast, but what is being done to protect them from adult situations?

MTV & VH-1 play videos? : 5/14/2008
Dear Eme: I haven't watched MTV in years and stopped watching VH-1 a few years ago when they started showing nothing but endless "top 100" shows and reality tv. Are you saying that they actually play videos on these networks? Kids today aren't that much different from when I was in high school. There was this movie that came out when I was a teenager called "Dirty Dancing." It had a lot of "oldies" in it along with some modern tunes. Before long I remember some of my friends and classmates singing several of the "oldies" that they probably would be embarrassed to sing before this film came out. I'm sure that something similar is happening now with the recent "Hairspray" remake. It isn't prudish for someone to take objection to some of the gratuitous videos, music and dancing young kids are exposed to. We're not talking about young adults here. These are children and adolescents who already have enough to deal with in today's crazy world. Now we're continuing to rob them of their innocence at an increasingly younger age.
