On April 19 the Goose Creek Police Department sponsored its 23rd annual “Making a Difference for St. Jude” Bike-A-Thon to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
I would like to report the success of this year’s campaign. We had another great year with 28 participants who rode 302 miles and raised $6,032 for the hospital. Keep in mind that 85.1 percent of every dollar received by St. Jude goes directly to research and treatment.
I would also like to express my thanks and gratitude to all those who came together to contribute to this year’s success – to the riders, the multitude of citizens and businesses who sponsored the riders and the businesses who donated many fine incentive prizes for the riders. I would also like to thank Pastor Harry Scarborough of the New Life Baptist Church for opening the church facilities for us to use and you for publishing news releases during the six weeks prior to our ride event. You all share in this success.
Since the hospital opened in 1962, more than 77 children and their families from South Carolina have gone to St. Jude and received total medical care for a catastrophic illness. Worldwide, thousands of others have benefited from the research findings that have developed better and more successful treatment methods. Today, the survival rate for the once deadly acute lymphoblastic leukemia is 90 percent.
