Tragedy struck Berkeley County Saturday afternoon, as Berkeley High School football standout D.J. Weathers was killed in a single-car crash on Black Tom Road. Weathers had scored two touchdowns in the Stags’ 40-14 win over Stratford not 24 hours earlier.

A squirrel chewed through a power line causing a power outage at Hanahan High School, which led to an early dismissal at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Berkeley County School District PIO Kathie Sizemore said.

Each year the Berkeley County School District seems to score better on Adequate Yearly Progress, the accountability measurement of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The South Carolina Department of Education recently released AYP and Palmetto Assessment of State Standards test results.
For the 2009-10 school year, 22 county schools met AYP, while 16 met AYP last year. BCSD met 36 of 37 district objectives, or 97.3 percent, which surprisingly means it did not meet AYP according to the federal law. Last year the district met 35 of 37 objectives.

Volunteers arranged for temporary lodging, distributed comfort kits – and stuffed animals to the children – and arranged for follow up services by mental health counselors.

Cars were parked in the grass all along the paved drop-off loop at Cane Bay Elementary School last week, as Aug. 17 marked Berkeley County School District’s first day for the 2010-11 year.
The district’s first day enrollment numbers were inaccurate due to a computer glitch, but district PIO Kathie Sizemore said 29,123 students were recorded for third day enrollment. Enrollment generally increases throughout the school year. Class sizes are not expected to rise this year, Sizemore added.

In addition to imparting useful and important child safety information, Sunday afternoon’s Child Safety Awareness Day at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church had another benefit for the community.
The event, which was sponsored by the Salvatore Muscarella Lodge No. 2842 Sons of Italy, also collected donations for Helping Hands of Goose Creek. And, with a national economy still struggling to regain its footing, Helping Hands needs all of the donations it can get.
