Thursday brought great news for Berkeley County.
The South Carolina Department of Commerce, Berkeley County and the South Carolina State Ports Authority (SCSPA) have announced that Moulton Logistics Management will locate its new distribution and logistics facility in Berkeley County.
Environmental grants total over $4,000 for teachers
Over $4,000 in grants were recently awarded directly to Berkeley County school teachers to be used to promote environmental education in the classroom.
The grants were awarded to the winners of the Berkeley Kids Who Care about the Environment project competition. There were a total of 90 projects submitted by a total of 227 teachers and 5,068 students.
An alligator bite sustained by a Cypress Gardens visitor on Monday afternoon was the result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, according to Cypress Gardens Director Dwight Williams.
The visitor – a female – was walking on one of the Cypress Gardens trail when she surprised an alligator, who bit her on the leg and hand. The injuries were not serious.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 20 for the return of the semi-annual  Giant Goose Creek Yard Sale hosted by the City Goose Creek Recreation Department.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on the front lawn of the Casey Community Center.
Helping Hands of Goose Creek has been serving the local area since June 1989. 
The need for food assistance has grown due to the economy and job loss. 
A sampling of nefarious doings obtained from Goose Creek Police Department and Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office reports:
• In yet another online business transaction scam, a Goose Creek woman reported that she had been in contact via Yahoo Messenger with a man who is allegedly in London, England, intending to buy a car from him he had advertised on EBay. They agreed on a price of $2,960 to be transferred via Western Union to another man. She wired the funds and when she did not hear from either man about the transaction, she contacted EBay, the site from which they were allegedly doing business. EBay informed her that the transaction was a scam and that they had several similar incidents reported.
An autopsy has revealed that a Mt. Pleasant man found over the weekend in Berkeley County died of natural causes.
The body of John Eury, 40, was discovered off Highway 41 near Huger Saturday, Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury said.
A seismic study presented to the Berkeley County School Board shows many district schools and buildings are in shaky condition.
Chief operations officer Ann Williams presented a seismic study showing how district schools and buildings would hold up during earthquakes at the Feb. 23 school board meeting.
Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis announced on Monday night that 2010 U.S. Census forms should be arriving in county residents’ mailboxes soon and urged all citizens to complete the form before the stated deadline.

Brown announces candidacy for supervisor
First Congressional Congressman Henry Brown ended weeks of speculation Friday afternoon, as he announced his candidacy for Berkeley County Supervisor.
The announcement came before dozens of supporters at the Holiday Inn Express in Moncks Corner.
An alligator bite at Cypress Gardens Monday sent a female walker to the hospital, and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources will release a report tomorrow with details of the incident.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at just after 1 p.m. Monday afternoon. DNR wildlife agents were called to the scene.

Strawn to challenge Sheriff DeWitt
Citing the need for law enforcement officers to get “Back to the Basics,” of serving and protecting all citizens of Berkeley County, longtime law-enforcement officer and former police chief Tim Strawn announced his candidacy for the office of Berkeley County Sheriff.
“Crime in America has been on a tremendous rise, outdistancing the capacity of police and our prison system to cope, apprehend and incarcerate,” Strawn said. “I intend to bring law enforcement back to the basics in Berkeley County, where our deputies don’t just work here for eight hours and go home, but they live here and are a daily part of the community.”

All Berkeley County School District schools have completed the election process for each school’s 2010 Teacher of the Year.
Those teachers will now compete for District Teacher of the Year. The announcement for the eight semi-finalists will be made on March 11.

Hot Shots
The “Hot Shots” basketball competition held on Feb. 20 at the Goose Creek Community Center saw 60 competitors try their luck at the free throw line or shooting baskets in a timed competition. Esdorn named county’s Employee of the Year
Berkeley County EMS Senior Crew Chief Chris Esdorn was named Berkeley County Employee of the Year during last week’s county council meeting.
According the county officials, Esdorn was selected for this prestigious award because of his impeccable work ethic, commitment to community education, dedication to reaching out to others and countless volunteer efforts.?Esdorn has been employed by Berkeley County close to five years. He heads the Berkeley County Government Public Information Education Resource (PIER) Team and is the chair of the State PIER Team.
The “Berkeley Reads” program has been underway three years and encourages students and adults to read the same books at the same time, Berkeley County Library Director Donna Osborne said.
The program was a topic for discussion at the Feb. 23 Berkeley County School Board meeting in Moncks Corner.
Hillerby found guilty, sentenced to life
A Summerville man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being convicted on a charge of homicide by child abuse/neglect.
It took a jury a little over two hours Thursday afternoon in Moncks Corner to return a guilty verdict against Justin Hillerby in connection with the death of Blaise Preston Spoerl, the son of Hillerby’s live-in girlfriend at the time, Jennifer Spoerl.
No one wants to be a victim of sexual assault. Most of the time, no one has to be.
That’s the message the Goose Creek Police Department wants to send to women throughout the community.

Hanahan’s Witte eyes open Congressional seat
When he retired from the Army as a Lt. Colonel in 1997, Stovall Witte of Berkeley County said he was not sure what his next move would be. His wife, Jan, suggested politics.
“Like most of us, I talk back to the TV when the news comes on,” Witte said with a laugh.

A Water and Sanitation procedural audit turned emotional at Berkeley County Council’s regular meeting Monday night in Moncks Corner.
The $45,000 audit approved by council last year was intended to bring to light details of a water line project in rural Berkeley County.
The rumor mill continues to swarm around Berkeley County government.
The latest rumor has the First District Congressman Henry Brown mulling over a possible run for Berkeley County Supervisor.
The South Carolina House has passed an election reform measure.  It will make it more difficult on candidates who avoid an election law that requires the reporting of campaign contributions. There is a 20-day period that the public may not be aware of but politicians know it well, as the time between the filing of the last required election report a few weeks before an election and the election itself.
Contributions made during that period won’t show up until the report filed after the election.
School quilt sews together cultures
Sedgedfield Intermediate School in Goose Creek has sewn together a cultural quilt to celebrate the ethnic diversity of its students.
The quilt was the final thread in the cultural project, which took months. Its completion was celebrated Feb. 1 at the school as students, parents, siblings, school and district staff, including Superintendent Anthony Parker and Principal Susan Best, attended.
On Monday March 1, the Goose Creek NAACP and the U.S. Postal Service are extending Black History Month for a day to honor World War II Veterans and give Goose Creek residents an opportunity to learn about a fascinating African-American, Doris “Dorie” Miller.  
Dorie Miller, a Pearl Harbor hero, was the first African-American recipient of the Navy Cross. 
The Berkeley Republican Breakfast has invited Republican candidates for Berkeley County Sheriff and Berkeley County Coroner to speak at its March 6 breakfast. 
Sheriff Wayne DeWitt and candidates for coroner Johnny Hill, Bill Salisbury and Sharon Shuler have all confirmed their attendance. Each candidate will be given five minutes to speak and questions will be taken from the floor. 
Last fall, my fellow House Republicans and I met across our state to discuss the issues that you told us were important.  In January, based on these recommendations, we unveiled an agenda focused on creating jobs, reforming government, improving education, and protecting state’s rights.  
This week, we took action on three of those four items.  
On July 30, 2003 The Berkeley Independent and The Goose Creek Gazette published an article concerning work done by Berkeley County employees on private property.
The article may have left the impression that Robert Metts, then Berkeley County Deputy Supervisor, had work performed on his property by county employees without paying for the services.
Students collect hundreds of toothbrushes, soap bars
Westview Elementary School’s 408 students have answered the call.
As a new campaign for local charities enters its third month at the school, students have already collected 550 bars of soap and 951 toothbrushes.
