Lady Knights leaning on young players
The Stratford High School volleyball team is counting on a lot of new faces this season, third-year coach Tracie Lake said.
“We’ve got three returning starters and the rest are brand new, either played JV last season or are new to the game,” she added.
Knights stumble in season opener
The Berkeley Stags picked up where they left off in 2009, pouring on six touchdowns in a 40-14 rout of Stratford Friday night in Moncks Corner.
“Business as usual,” said Stags coach Jerry Brown in reference to the 40 points put on the scoreboard by his offense. “I thought after losing guys like Bruce and R.J. last season that we’d have trouble putting points on the board. That wasn’t the case tonight.”
Winning Form
Morgan Erickson from Goose Creek’s World Teoul Moon Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and Healing Arts recently won first place in youth sparring and open hands forms competition in Merritt Island, Florida. She also performed at her best when she competed in forms against eight other competitors at a Black Belts For Christ Tournament in July, beating all of her opponents in sparring, including an intermediate experienced blue belt. Above, Morgan is pictured with instructor Richard Doolittle.
In JV football action last Thursday, Hanahan defeated Timberland 34-16 behind quarterback Anthony Smalls. Small tossed four touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Hawks. Smalls passed for 172 yards and ran for 57 more.
Brian Ford caught two of the TD passes. Marquis Mack and Ryan Wells also had TD receptions.
Serving notice: Lady Hawks counting on ball control
As Hanahan High School volleyball coach Wendy Anderson prepares for her fourth season, the Lady Hawks look like they’ve got potential to be a strong team if everything comes together.
“We’ve got a lot of kids with experience though it’s not all at the varsity level,” Anderson said. “Some of them have experience playing JV or club ball … what we’re trying to do well is passing and serve receive. Our focus is ball control and passing.”
Hawks rally comes up short; Bishops up next
In short, it was wild and long.
Hanahan’s second game of the season stands out for those two reasons.
Net-working: Lady Gators counting on team chemistry
Goose Creek High School volleyball coach Jay Watterworth says the Lady Gators are the best they’ve been in his five years at the helm.
“This is the best we’ve looked this early in the season,” Watterworth said.  “We’ve got girls on the team that want to win. Their attitudes are great. If anything bad happens, they kind of get mad at themselves for about three seconds and then they push it aside and get on to the next point.”
The Elevate Skills Camp will be held for high school basketball players Sept. 18-19 at Goose Creek High School.
The camp, limited to the first 50 participants, is for boys and girls.
Cobras blanked by rival in season opener
Cane Bay’s season-opening loss left coach Jeff Cruce as aggravated as he’s ever been on the sideline.
The Cobras were blanked by rival Ashley Ridge 14-0 Friday despite a mostly-efficient performance on offense. The Cobras dropped too many passes and failed to finish a number of drives.
Summerville – Kenny Walker’s first coaching win may eventually go down as the one he remembers most - not necessarily for being No. 1 - but for the one that left him the most drained.
Ashley Ridge High School opened the Walker era with a grueling 14-0 victory over rival Cane Bay Friday. It wasn’t always pretty or easy but it was worth the wait for Walker.
Goose Creek High School is selling reserved season tickets for its six home football games this season for $40. Reserved parking passes are $25.
Those interested can contact Gators football coach Chuck Reedy at 797-0871.
Cane Bay aims to take series lead vs. Ashley Ridge
By student population, Cane Bay’s fellow upstart, Ashley Ridge, has the advantage in school size.
On the football field, it’s dead even.
Irmo tough opening-week test
The Goose Creek Gators open the regular season Friday at home against Irmo in a Lowcountry vs. the Midlands match up.
Stratford High School begins its football season with a drive to Moncks Corner to meet rival Berkeley Friday night.
A lot less is riding on the line, though, with the Stags’ drop down to Class AAA. There used to be playoff implications in the series but now it’s just a non-region game, though both sides clearly want to beat the other.
JV Football
Goose Creek quarterback Dantez Bennanmon rolls out of the pocket during the first annual Swamp Fox Junior Varsity Jamboree held at Ashley Ridge High School Aug. 21. The Gators won their two-quarter scrimmage with Ashley Ridge 14-12.
Fans holding tickets to the 40th Annual Sertoma Football Jamboree at Johnson Hagood Stadium Aug. 19-20 will be able to exchange them for a complimentary general admission ticket to The Citadel's season's opener against Chowan University on Sept. 4.
Sertoma tickets may be exchanged at The Citadel Department of Athletics Ticket Office in McAlister Field House in advance or at the Johnson Hagood Stadium ticket office the day of the game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
The Goose Creek Recreation Center is currently holding signups for a middle school volleyball league.
Both Stratford and Goose Creek high school volleyball coaches Tracie Lake and Jay Watterworth are encouraging all interested parties to participate.
It was simply Chris Brown’s night.
The junior receiver hauled in 10 passes for 153 yards and scored four touchdowns in Hanahan’s 32-28 win at Hartsville Friday night.
Growing up, after Santa Claus and before girls, there existed a period of time in a young man’s life when we were consumed with sports and games.
That time is called sixth grade. When I was 12 years old I ate, slept and breathed sports. So did my friends, Wendell and Steve. We couldn’t get enough of it, especially during school.
The Goose Creek D-Backs are looking for two players to fill the team’s roster for the fall 2011 season.
The squad is a competitive team and are looking to play 6 to 8 tournaments this fall. Dedicated ballplayers with pitching and infield experience are being sought.
The Berkeley County volleyball scrimmage day has been set for Saturday at Cane Bay High School.
Berkeley, Cane Bay, Cross, Goose Creek, Stratford and Timberland high schools will all compete in the event.
Stratford High School athletics began selling reserved seat passes, general admission passes and reserved parking decals for the 2010 varsity football season on Aug. 17.
All three passes allow admittance to all home varsity games (excluding playoffs). The reserved seating is $50, general admission $25 and reserved parking $25.
Knights too much for Conway in scrimmage
Stratford High School’s football scrimmage with Conway last week produced several positive signs for the upcoming season.
Ryan Barnwell scored on a 65-yard touchdown run and returned a kickoff 86 yards for another score to lead the Knights to a 24-13 win over the Tigers Aug. 10.
The 40th Annual Sertoma Classic will be held this Thursday and Friday at The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium.
This year’s event will celebrate four decades of Sertoma football in the Lowcountry with a look back at some of the prominent players over the years who have gone on to the collegiate and professional football ranks, as well as those who have gone on to distinguish themselves in civic service and business.
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend when it comes to football in the Lowcountry in August.
I have a tendency to get rained on a lot. I mean, seriously stormed on, where I think the world is about to end and they decided to end it at my feet.
The Heisman
Hanahan High School baseball coach Brian Mitchell was among a large group that struck a pose with the Heisman Trophy near the end of the Lowcountry Sports Auction Saturday at The Redbank Club. The trophy belongs to former South Carolina running back George Rogers, a notable guest at the annual event that benefits HHS athletics. Former Gamecock announcer Bob Fulton and former South Carolina State football coach Willie Jefferies also attended the event.
Hawks expecting shootout in Hartsville
Hanahan is one of the few teams around the state opening the season in Week 0.
The Hawks will make the two-hour-plus trip to Hartsville Friday night.
Hawks explosive in first live scrimmage
It was only a scrimmage but it was impressive.
Hanahan’s football team dominated West Ashley High School 49-14 Aug. 10 to pump a little more euphoria into a program looking to rebound this season.
Goose Creek High School is currently selling athletic passes for the 2010-2011 school year.
The passes cover entry for all regular season JV and varsity home games for all sports.
Gators fall in second scrimmage against Stags
Goose Creek football coach Chuck Reedy said his team made improvements from its first summer scrimmage to its second.
Still, the Gators lost 14-10 Aug. 10 to rival Berkeley in Moncks Corner.
Lowcountry Sports Auction
Former South Carolina State football coach Willie Jefferies, a hall of famer, speaks to the crowd at the eighth annual Lowcountry Sports Auction Saturday night at The Redbank Club in Goose Creek.
The Dorchester Dragons had a solid performance during the 2010 Special Olympics National Games in Lincoln, Neb. July 18-23.
The team, consisting of athletes from Dorchester and Berkeley counties, brought home nine medals from the national competition.
Alex Rodriguez reached one of those lofty milestones last week when he belted his 600th home run. Given the whole steroid mess of recent years and “A-Roid’s” recent confession that he used performance enhancing drugs from 2001 through the 2003 season, the milestone was met with as many yawns as boos or cheers.
I can remember when the world used to stop and watch whenever a ball player reached such milestones. Stations would break into regular programming to update us on the progress.
Hawks ready to line up against outside competition
Hanahan High School football coach Charlie Patterson has grown a little weary of watching his players hit each other.
When the Hawks got a chance to hit somebody else last Friday, though, a torrential downpour prevented them from going toe-to-toe with James Island in their first preseason scrimmage.
Joseph happy with Hanahan cheer camp
Hanahan High School cheerleading coach Kim Joseph was more than pleased with the most recent camp she and her squads helped run last week at the town’s recreation center on Yeamans Hall Road.
“Camp went really well this week,” Joseph said. “I was happy with the turnout and hope in the future we will increase our numbers. The JV and varsity cheerleaders helped out all week.”
