Knight wrestlers dominant in playoff opener
Stratford’s wrestling team barely broke a sweat in whipping Hartsville in the opening round of the Class AAAA playoffs Monday.
Nathan Grinsteinner’s match at 145 pounds summed up the domination in a microcosm. He pinned his man in seven seconds to highlight the 66-18 win. The Knights also got a rash of forfeits at many of the 14 weight classes.
Stratford’s girls basketball team wins against Summerville rivals
Stratford’s girls basketball team won the rivalry game with Summerville – but both teams hit game-winners for charity in light of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
Before the Lady Knights’ 39-37 victory Jan. 26, each player from Summerville and Stratford donated some of their own shoes to a world-wide relief effort headed up by Samaritan’s Feet, a non-profit ministry dedicated to changing lives through its Shoes of Hope program.

Hawks wrestlers earn top seed in Lower State
For three years in a row, Hanahan’s wrestling team has had to make the long trek to Loris in the playoffs just to lose each time.
If the Hawks get tripped up against Loris this season, it will be in Hanahan.
Raemond Robinson's two clutch free throws with just nine seconds left in the game pushed the Goose Creek Gators to a 60-59 Region 7-AAAA win over the Berkeley Stags Friday night.
The Stags had a chance to win the game with the ball in the hands of their main man Bruce Ellington, but a charging foul called with just 1.1 seconds left killed any Berkeley rally.
Bucs aiming to get back on track against Asheville
The Charleston Southern basketball team will try to end a three-game skid Thursday night at home against UNC Asheville.
The Buccaneers (10-11, 5-6 Big South) are coming off an ugly 58-51 loss to Presbyterian Saturday. The Blue Hose had just three wins before holding the Buccaneers to 37 percent shooting and their second-lowest scoring title of the season.
The Cane Bay basketball teams dropped a pair of Region 6-AA games Friday to Garrett Tech, with the girls falling 53-45 and the boys 56-44.
The boys team fell to 4-16 on the year while the girls dropped to 10-7.

Stratford hoops
It’s a cliché Stratford boys basketball coach Troy Johnson is absolutely tired of thinking to himself after every region game.
“Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,” he said after his team’s 62-56 home loss to Berkeley Friday.  “We could be 4-0 (in the region) but we’re 0-4.”
Shockwave 11-and-under travel baseball tryouts are set for Sunday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 at 3 p,m. at the Gahagan Sports Complex. If age 11 or under on May 1, 2010 please attend or call Brad Horton at 509-1060.

Hawkins gives the Lady Gators another offensive weapon
It’s not like the light just came on for senior Tyshonda Hawkins. She’s had the tools all along, Goose Creek girls basketball coach Tim Baldwin said.
“Her shot is coming around and her defense and speed have always been there,” he added. “She’s really worked on her offensive game and she’s taking better shots.”
Gators capture region wrestling title
Anything other than this crowning moment would have been a huge disappointment for Goose Creek’s wrestling team.
“We’ve got a bunch of seniors and they’ve done a good job with their leadership,” Gators coach Leonard Covington said after his team’s 54-21 win over Berkeley Jan. 20 wrapped up the Region 7-AAAA title. “With all these seniors, I thought we should have (won the region championship).”
Buccaneers see two streaks end, want to start another
Gone is a three-game conference winning and perfect home record but the Charleston Southern basketball team has its toughness intact, Buccaneers coach Barclay Radebaugh said.
“This team is very resilient, very tough, and they’re disappointed but they will get over it quickly,” he said after CSU’s 64-56 loss to Coastal Carolina Saturday night. “They know they can compete with any team in our league. We’ll continue to work as hard as we can.”
Charleston Southern’s baseball team was selected seventh in the Big South Conference’s preseason poll as voted on by the league’s baseball coaches.
For the third consecutive year, Coastal Carolina University has been voted the preseason favorite.
Stratford’s baseball team is ranked fourth in The Diamond Prospects’ Class AAAA Top 10 and ninth in the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association top 10.
The Knights ended last season with an 18-6 mark and graduated four seniors.
Over the weekend, local wrestling teams were in action.
Stratford’s grapplers competed in the Coach Trap Memorial Wrestling tournament (formerly the Battery Creek duals) and placed fifth in the event by edging Beaufort 32-31.

Y’all win.
After 29 years of living in the South, I will concede one thing about SEC football.

Junior forward Jaron Denmark scored 10 points to lead a balanced scoring effort and the Hanahan boys team clamped down on defense en route to a 48-37 victory over Waccamaw Friday night.
The win salvaged a split in the opening week of Region 7-AA play and helped the Hawks shake off the sting of a region-opening loss to Timberland on Tuesday.
Stratford baseball coach John Chalus was more than just a bit surprised when he found out he was named the Class AAAA Coach of the Decade by Diamond Prospects, a web site devoted to covering South Carolina high school baseball.
“There are a lot of other great coaches out there that deserved this over me,’ he said. “We can’t forget the players, assistant coaches and parents that were right there along with us. A lot of times it was just my job not to mess it up.”
CSU bringing the heat in conference play
The two hottest teams in the Big South will encounter one another this Saturday night at Charleston Southern.
The home-standing Bucs have won five of their last six conference games since starting 0-2 and their next opponent, Coastal Carolina, has tied the Big South record for best start after 20 games. The 1991-92 Liberty team and the 2008-09 VMI team also had 17-3 starts.

They’re back.
