Home victories and region championships continue to pile up for Goose Creek’s girls basketball team.

Hanahan girls basketball coach Steve Childers said his team is sticking to what it believes in and the scoreboard is reflecting that.
The Lady Hawks were 13-4 overall and 7-1 in league play heading into Tuesday’s game versus Region 6-AA frontrunner Bishop England.
Stratford’s wrestling team pinned down another region championship.
The Knights defeated rival Goose Creek 42-18 on Jan. 25, capturing their eighth region championship since 2002. It’s their fourth region title in the last five seasons.
Stratford High School’s wrestling team ended the regular season with a second-place finish in the Stratford Invitational on Saturday.
The Knights finished behind winner Bamberg-Ehrhardt. The Red Raiders had five weight class winners and placed four other wrestlers inside the top four of their classes to edge the Knights by less than six points, 176-170.50.
Goose Creek’s basketball teams swept the season series with rival Stratford on Friday at GCHS, coasting to victories in each game.
The Lady Gators downed Stratford 47-18, followed by the Gators’ 63-45 victory in the boys’ game.
CSU announces 2012 football schedule
A rematch with The Citadel, a trip to Illinois and homecoming contest against an in-state foe highlight the 2012 Charleston Southern football schedule, as announced on Monday by head coach Jay Mills.
“I’m excited about the variety of experiences our young men get the opportunity to have playing football at Charleston Southern,” said Mills, who will enter his 10th season at the helm of the Bucs. “Our first game in school history against a Big Ten opponent - I believe will motivate and excite every team member.
It’s Super Bowl Sunday time again. I loathe this time of year almost as much as I do New Year’s Eve. Why?
Because there will be Super Bowl parties galore and I won’t be invited to any of them. So I get bitter.
The Northwood Academy girls basketball team was ranked No. 2 in the latest SCISA Class AAA poll but will have a say-so in that this week.

Welch making impact for Lady Gamecocks
Former Goose Creek High School basketball standout Aleighsa Welch is picking up right where she left off.
Welch, a true freshman for the South Carolina Lady Gamecocks, has proven to be an integral part of her new team’s success.
Stratford High School’s basketball teams were unable to gain much-needed Region 7-AAAA victories on Friday.
Both stayed winless in the region slate heading into Tuesday’s games against James Island. Stratford begins the second trip through the region foes on Friday at GCHS.
Show off your basketball shooting skills at Goose Creek Recreation’s  annual Hot Shots basketball competition at the Goose Creek Community Center on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m.
The competition is open to ages 7 to adult, with T-shirts awarded to first place finishers in six age categories.  Last year nearly 60 contestants participated in this popular event.
It’s almost time again for the annual old-timers football game, played every spring at Goose Creek High School.
This year’s game will be held March 10 at 6 p.m.
The Stratford Invitational wrestling tournament will be held Saturday at SHS.
The 15-team event will begin at 9:30 a.m. and wind down in the afternoon. Each weight class will be contested by up to 16 individuals.
The Hanahan High School wrestling team dominated the Region 6-AA tournament at Stall High School last week, with nine Hawks grapplers earning region championships.
The Hawks finished with 224 team points, well ahead of second-place Bishop England (132) and third-place Stall (101.5).
The Goose Creek boys basketball team lost a close one and won a close one last week in Region 7-AAAA action.
The Gators faltered Tuesday on a last-second shot to West Ashley, 51-50, then nipped James Island 68-65 on Friday. They were set to end the first trip through the region slate against Wando this Tuesday before starting the second trip through region competition on Friday at home against rival Stratford.
Goose Creek’s wrestling team nailed down a key Region 7-AAAA victory over Wando on Monday, defeating the Warriors 40-29 at WHS.
It sets up a region championship showdown between rivals Goose Creek and Stratford on Wednesday night, Jan. 25. A year ago, SHS defeated GCHS to lock down the region championship.
The Stratford Cheerleading winter camp will be hosted by the SHS basketball cheerleaders from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the school.
The camp is for kids ages 3-12.
Finally, we have football season.
It’s cold and snowing in places and all the games are being played outside. No more domed teams are left. That’s what I call football.
Hawks third in Class AA, Knights seventh in Class AAAA
Local wrestling teams and their individual grapplers aren’t hard to find in scmat.com’s newest rankings.
Hanahan is third in Class AA, Stratford seventh in Class AAAA and Cane Bay 10th in Class AAA. Goose Creek is 11th in the Class AAAA poll.
If NASCAR’s objective was to eliminate tandem drafting at restrictor-plate racetracks, it remains a work in progress, based on the recent Preseason Thunder test session at Daytona International Speedway
Accordingly, in a meeting with crew chiefs, NASCAR announced additional modifications to a restrictor-plate competition package that already had undergone major changes in the offseason.
Stratford High School graduate Justin Greene, now an outfielder in the Chicago White Sox organization, will teach the fundamentals of becoming an elite outfielder at Charleston Baseball Academy.  
A one-day day camp will be held Saturday, Jan. 21 at Dennis Park from noon to 2 p.m.
The first round in the city basketball rivalry went to Goose Creek last week.
The Lady Gators defeated Stratford 53-19 while the Goose Creek boys followed with a 60-47 win over the Knights, completing the sweep at SHS.
To the victor goes the spoils.
The Goose Creek football team continued to reap the rewards from its state football title last fall in a ceremony held at the school last week. The Gators were honored by MaxPreps in the school’s auditorium before a crowd of over 100.
A fun, unique sport that’s popular in Arizona, Florida and even as close as Myrtle Beach is coming to Hanahan.
Pickle Ball is a moderately paced, easy game to learn and similar to tennis, yet easier on older joints and requires less endurance.
When the season dawned in November, one of the major goals desired by Hanahan’s girls basketball team was a home playoff game.
As the campaign enters its final stages, the Lady Hawks are in position lock up one of those.
A number of local fall sports athletes have been recognized for their accomplishments by the High School Sports Report, a prep sports publication that circulates statewide.
The group will be honored at the HSSR’s fall sports banquet on Feb. 19 in Columbia.

The college football season has finally ended, and never before have I allowed myself to become so blasé about the sport.
Cobra wrestlers come out on top
The Cane Bay wrestling team is getting healthy at just the right time of the season.
The Cobras, with a strong lineup from top to bottom, captured the crown in the annual Hawk Invitational wrestling tournament at HHS on Saturday.

Stratford’s Brandon Young records a pin at 220 pounds against Ashley Ridge last week to lift the Knights to a hard-fought 38-32 win in a non-region wrestling match. The win upped Stratford’s record to 19-2 on the season.
Stratford enters region play with momentum
Three players scored in double figures and Stratford’s boys basketball team played its first complete game in a while, knocking off Cane Bay 74-55 on Saturday at SHS.
With the win, the Knights improved to 9-5 overall and headed into the Region 7-AAAA slate on Tuesday with some steam.  A rival game with Goose Creek was held after press time.

The Hanahan Recreation Department has announced that youth baseball, softball and T-ball registration for boys and girls ages 4-15 will take place Jan. 17 – Feb. 24.
The fee to register is $30 for Hanahan residents and $50 for non-residents.
Goose Creek sweeps Wave in non-region games
Goose Creek’s basketball teams broke out the brooms on Summerville on Friday night, sweeping the Green Wave at GCHS.
The Lady Gators built a sizable first-half lead and coasted home with a 62-42 victory, while the Gators pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 73-57 win.
