Buccaneers see two streaks end, want to start another

Gone is a three-game conference winning and perfect home record but the Charleston Southern basketball team has its toughness intact, Buccaneers coach Barclay Radebaugh said.

“This team is very resilient, very tough, and they’re disappointed but they will get over it quickly,” he said after CSU’s 64-56 loss to Coastal Carolina Saturday night. “They know they can compete with any team in our league. We’ll continue to work as hard as we can.”

The Buccaneers (10-9, 5-4 Big South) travel to Winthrop Thursday. The Eagles are 9-10 overall and tied for third place with CSU and three other teams in conference play.

Their 65-45 win at Gardner-Webb was their fourth conference win in five games since losing at CSU 57-54 Jan. 4.

“Winthrop is playing very well,” Radebaugh said. “They are the most physical team in our league, and defensively, they create a lot of problems for us. They play particularly well at home, and they are much improved over the last few weeks. We certainly have our work cut out for us on Thursday.”

Knocking down shots was a problem against league-leading Coastal Carolina (18-3 8-1).

The Bucs shot just 38 percent from the field and 23 percent from behind the arc, while committing 16 turnovers. Still they had a chance to keep both ongoing streaks alive.

“Execution wasn't that bad,” Radebaugh said. “We got tremendous looks and shots just didn’t go. The one part where we did struggle to execute was with our turnovers. Those live-ball turnovers led to easy layups. But we got good shots, and they just didn't go down.”

After trailing 42-34, the Bucs went on a 13-4 run to take the lead 47-46 on Kelvin Martin’s putback with 6:56 left in the game.

After briefly losing the lead, Jamarco Warren’s lone 3-pointer put CSU back in front 52-50 but Coastal finished strong.

The Bucs were led by Martin, who posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Jeremy Sexton reached double figures with 11 points, including three 3-pointes. Tom Tankelewicz also posted 11 points off the bench.

Warren, the team’s leading scorer (16.3 ppg) struggled to find the bottom of the net, hitting just the one 3-pointer in 14 attempts.

Joseph Harris had a game high 22 points for the Chanticleers.

Lady Bucs edge Radford Monday

Katie Tull scored 19 points and Kelsey Wasmer added 16 points as the Charleston Southern women’s basketball team ended a three-game losing streak in conference play with a 67-61 win over Radford.

The Lady Bucs (10-9, 2-4) shot 48 percent from the field, their highest total of the season in a Big South game.

Charleston Southern hits the road this weekend for tilts with Presbyterian and Winthrop Jan. 30 and Feb. 1.

CSU softball team fourth in preseason poll

Charleston Southern’s softball team was picked to finish fourth in the Big South annual preseason poll, while Radford was chosen as the preseason favorite by the league’s softball coaches.

Radford, picked to repeat as conference champion, picked up six first-place votes and earned 48 out of 49 possible points.

Winthrop and Liberty were second and third in the poll.

The Big South softball season begins Feb. 12 with Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina in action at the Carolina Cup in Columbia.
