Cane Bay teams enter home stretch needing wins

The Cane Bay basketball teams dropped a pair of Region 6-AA games Friday to Garrett Tech, with the girls falling 53-45 and the boys 56-44.

The boys team fell to 4-16 on the year while the girls dropped to 10-7.

“We’ve had to adjust our goals based on the adversity we have faced, but the team continues to improve as they learn the system and grasp some fundamentals,” Cane Bay boys coach Calvin Craft said. “With the tight standings in the region behind Burke, we are hoping to play spoiler and upset someone down the stretch.

“We have been close and have most of our remaining games at home.”

The Cobras recently lost Jiquan Hammond, one of the team’s best scorers, to a knee injury. He had scored 25 points against Ashley Ridge and was on pace for a similar performance Jan. 22 against Burke before suffering his injury.

The Cobras, 0-6 in the region, did end a long losing streak Jan. 28, beating Lincoln in a non-region game to complete a season sweep of the Yellow Jackets.

Xavier Moultrie had a big game, with 22 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and six steals.  Moultrie leads the team in scoring at around 13 points a game.

The Lady Cobras are 2-4 in league play after the loss to Garrett.

Angelique Green continues to score at a high rate for Cane Bay. Against the Lady Falcons, she scored a game-high 24 points and averages 16 points per game.

Alaina Haney is the second leading scorer at six points per game. Shatejzia Robinson grabs 10 rebounds a game.

After taking on Woodland Feb. 2, Cane Bay is to meet Ashley Ridge Feb. 5.

The final two games of the season are Burke on Feb. 9 and Bishop England on Feb. 11.
