Hawks grapplers drop to third; Gators’ Williams second-ranked heavyweight

With the state duals just around the corner, scmat.com has released its next set of team and individual rankings for each classification.

The Hanahan wrestling team is third in Class AA, while Goose Creek and Stratford are ranked 12th and 16th respectively in Class AAAA.

The Hawks slipped from second place after losing twice to Abbeville this past weekend in the Lakeland Duals. Loris is No. 1 in Class AA and Abbeville moved into the second spot.

Cane Bay is ranked 16th in Class AA.

In Class AAAA, Fort Dorchester and Rock Hill are the top two teams. Summerville is fourth.

Individually, Gators heavyweight Shawn Williams is the highest ranked wrestler in the area. He’s second at his weight class.

Teammate Jawaun Foreman is among a group of local wrestlers ranked third in their weight classes. Foreman wrestles at 152 pounds for the Gators.

Hanahan has three grapplers in the third spot, JJ Johnson (103), Michael Wolfe (125) and Francis Boykin (135).

Hanahan’s Kofi Dwira (130) and Stratford’s Christian Dejesus (112) are fourth in their weight classes.

Other top-10 wrestlers for Hanahan are Cody Hancock (sixth, 140), Jeff Brule (ninth, 112) and Nick Thompson (10th, 171).

Joseph Vasquez (seventh, 119) and Nathan Grinsteiner (ninth, 145) are ranked from Stratford.

Goose Creek’s Joel Eaton is ranked eighth at 135 pounds.

The wrestling postseason begins Feb. 1 for Class AAAA teams and Feb. 3 for Class AA teams.

Goose Creek is the top seed in Region 7, while Stratford will finish either second or third.

Hanahan should be seeded first or second overall in the Lower State in Class AA when those seeds are announced Feb. 1.

“I anticipate the No. 1 seed (in the Lower State),” Hanahan coach Ray Adkins said. “I feel like we’ve worked hard for it. We’ve beaten a good many teams with winning records.”

The team finals are set for Feb. 13 at Ridge View High School.

The individual championships will be held Feb. 26-27 at Rock Hill High School.
