Gators notch tournament wins

Goose Creek remained perfect in the HIT baseball tournament Wednesday with an 8-0 romp over host West Ashley.

The win sent the Gators to the tournament’s quarterfinals against Midlothian High School out of Virginia Thursday night at Collins Park.

Standout Brent Perry led the Gator attack Wednesday, with a 2-for-3, 3-RBI performance that included a home run. Perry also was the game’s winning pitcher: he struck out six and gave up only two hits.

Perry’s two-out, third inning triple knocked in one run, and he would later score on a wild pitch.

The game was broken open in the fourth inning, however, as the Gators racked up six runs – all with two outs.

Yamil Perez and Kenny Bryant both had two-run singles; Josh Kibisz had an RBI single; and Tony Bryan scored on a wild pitch.

Perry capped the scoring with a solo homer.

The win raised Goose Creek’s overall record to 14-1, and followed an 11-6 Tuesday night win over Virginia’s Fauquier High School.

Josh Kubisz was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI’s, and Mitchell Huskey crushed a home run in a win that upped the Gator record to 13-1.

For the second time in as many games, the Gators got off to a fast start.

Coach Scott Durham’s squad scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third to take a commanding, 7-0 lead.

Fauquier answered, with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. But the Gator bats again came alive in the sixth and seventh, when a combined four runs crossed the plate to seal the win.

Gator slugger Kenny Bryant continued to shine, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI’s. Brent Perry also had a double and scored two runs; and Nick Jonason had a double, an RBI, and scored one run.

Huskey, who blanked White Plains in the HIT opener a day earlier, was 2-for-4 on the night with the homer and two RBI’s.

Chris Romack finished with a hit and two runs scored; Anthony DeMeo was 2-for-3 with a double, and Yamil Perez also scored a run.

Collecting the win for the Gators was Elijah Nichols (1-0), who pitched three and 1/3 innings of relief. Nichols allowed four hits, three runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
